[englisch/amerikanisch, blæk 'bɔtəm; wörtlich »schwarzer Boden« (= Erde am Ufer des Mississippi), nach Helmut Günther auch »schwarzer Hintern« (= afroamerikanische Herkunft), auch Black Shuffle], im Süden der USA in den frühen Zwanzigerjahren des 20. Jahrhunderts entstandener Modetanz, der auf dem Ragtime fußt, aber auch Elemente des New-Orleans-Jazz assimilierte. Umgekehrt nahm der neue Tanz auch Einfluss auf die musikalische Substanz des Jazz (z. B. in Jelly Roll Mortons »Black Bottom Stomp«, 1926).
 
Der weltbekannte »Black Bottom« von Ray Henderson (1896-1970) entstammt George Whites (1895-1952) Revue »Scandals« (1926). Der Höhepunkt der Black-Bottom-Welle war in den Jahren 1926/27. In englischen Tanzschulen erfand man neues charlestonähnliches Schrittmaterial, womit der Tanz auch in Europa populär wurde und den Charleston nach 1926 ablöste. Seine Popularität war jedoch nur von kurzer Dauer, dann kamen Lindy-Hop und andere Tänze auf. Eine rhythmisch-metrische Charakteristik besteht in der häufigen Synkopierung der jeweils zweiten Takthälfte, sonst weitgehend mit dem Charleston identisch.
